What’s next, Downtown?

Nearly 20 years ago renowned architect and planner Mario Gandelsonas helped author Des Moines' Vision Plan.  Much of the recent progress in downtown Des Moines was envisioned in that plan.  Now, just under 20 years later Mr. Gandelsonas has been hired as a consultant to assist the City of Des Moines, Polk County and the business community represented by the Downtown Community Alliance (DCA) and Greater Des Moines Partnership (GDMP) to work on the next long term plan for Downtown Des Moines.

When this project was undertaken in the Fall of 2006 the following project goals were established:

  • Identify future downtown opportunities
  • Propose frameworks that capitalize on existing and future downtown investments and/or catalyze further development
  • Develop strategies for building synergies and linkages to downtown amenities
  • Generate interest in the plan and expand momentum for downtown investment.

The plan was completed in the Fall of 2007.  Track the progress of the planning through the attached PDF files and provide your own input at planinput@downtowndesmoines.com.
