Walk Your Butt to the Can – New Cigarette Litter Prevention Program for Downtown Des Moines

Des Moines, IA – The Downtown Community Alliance, Operation Downtown, Metro Waste Authority, City of Des Moines and Keep Iowa Beautiful are announcing a Cigarette Litter Prevention Program for downtown Des Moines.  The local campaign will kick-off today, June 12, 2007, with a press conference to be held Downtown at Nollen Plaza on the North side of Walnut St. between 3rd and 4th Streets at 10 a.m.   The new program includes the installation of new cigarette butt receptacles downtown.  Currently, 20 ash receptacles have been purchased for placement.  The first receptacle will be installed today, June 12, by Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie, during the press conference. Also today, Metro Waste Authority and Keep Iowa Beautiful will present checks to the partnership to help build awareness of littering issues in downtown.   Keep America Beautiful’s Cigarette Litter Prevention Program was developed after identifying cigarette litter as the most common item found in cleanups around the country.  The heavy amount of cigarette butts makes cleanups very difficult and very costly.  Locally, Operation Downtown spends more than $100,000 a year cleaning up cigarette litter in downtown Des Moines.   “Cigarette litter is a problem for our community,” said Cownie.  “I strongly support the introduction of this program in downtown Des Moines.  We are encouraging downtown businesses, residents and visitors to become involved and help raise awareness that cigarette butts are litter too.”   “Litter and illegal dumping are serious environmental issues.  Metro Waste Authority is glad to be working as partner on this program, and we hope it encourages people to take more responsibility for their actions,” said Tom Hadden, Executive Director of Metro Waste Authority.  “Most people don’t know, but most of the metro area’s storm drains lead straight to streams and rivers.  When litter is washed away after a rain, that litter ends up in our waterways.”   About 95 percent of cigarette filters are composed of cellulose acetate, a form of plastic which can take up to seven years to break down.  Research shows that individuals who would never consider littering an aluminum can or a piece of paper do not consider cigarette butts litter.    #          #          #
