Elbert: Makeover of Des Moines skywalk glitters with images of city

Visitors to downtown Des Moines this winter should notice several changes on the city’s 30-year-old skywalk system.

Beginning Saturday, with the tee-off of the 26th annual skywalk Open Golf Tournament and continuing through the state wrestling and basketball tournaments, tens of thousands of Iowans who don’t work or live downtown will pass through the city’s nearly four miles of skywalks.

They’ll see changes that are the result of a $15,000 face-lift.

Much of the change is subtle. Windows were washed and new carpet installed; burned-out lights and drooping ceiling tiles were replaced, said Jeff Hatfield of the Graham Group, who helped organize the effort.
