Zipcar Inc. has started operating the program that will include six vehicles located on campus and four others located throughout Iowa City. The cars can be reserved for as short as an hour or for as long as several days. University members can join for $25, and rates for vehicle rental will be as low as $7 per hour and $66 per day. Iowa City residents can join for a $25 application fee and a $60 annual fee. Local transportation officials say they hope the program encourages some students to leave their cars at home, which will reduce parking demand and traffic congestion.
